Toby MacFarlaine (born 28 November 1975 in Oxford, England) is an English rock bassist. MacFarlaine is the bassist for a UK rockband called Stone Gods, with the remaining members of the now defunct UK rock band The Darkness. He is also the bassist for Boy Cried Wolf featuring Manic Street Preachers second guitarist Wayne Murray. He regularly writes blogs for the band and has made a name for himself through many interviews and articles. MacFarlaine was also in the band Thirteen:13, and has toured with Ash guitarist Charlotte Hatherley and Irish indie rock band JJ72. Most notably, he spent 7 years playing the bass with Blur guitarist Graham Coxon touring England, Europe, Japan and America.
On 24 December 2006 it was reported by numerous news agencies that Toby MacFarlaine would join The Darkness to play bass, due to Justin Hawkins' departure. Previous bassist Richie Edwards is to become the lead vocalist, thus leaving the position of bass open for MacFarlaine.
On 28 December 2006 MacFarlaine posted the following message on Graham Coxon's messageboard:
“ | ...can't divulge much at present, but I am indeed in a new band with Dan, Ed and Rich who are presently known as The Darkness. A new name is to be announced shortly and then we shall take over the world and rule it with a rubber fist! [1] | ” |
Stone Gods debut was released on 7 July 2008, to critical acclaim including Classic Rock Magazine nominations for Best Band and Best Album. They went on to tour with Airbourne, Black Stone Cherry and Velvet Revolver. Stone Gods second album has reportedly been recorded but has yet to be released. Toby's side project Boy Cried Wolf features ex Thirteen:13 bandmate Wayne Murray and has a debut E.P. slated for release in November 2010.
